Fiber Talk with Terri Bay

One of Terri Bay’s Lotus box designs.

Whitework, blackwork, Hardanger, Lotus boxes, and Romanian point lace are just some of the topics we cover with this week’s guest Terri Bay of Terri Bay Needlework Designs. Terri began stitching in her early 20s while working in a day care center to earn money for college. She needed something to do while the children were napping and a coworker gave her a cross-stitch pattern. Her journey into Ukrainian Whitework began when she inherited a partially finished table runner from her aunt. After several years of developing her needlework skills, she finally finished the runner and was hooked on whitework and whitework design. Most of her designs are Ukrainian in their genesis, but she is starting to add other techniques, such as blackwork, into them. She also enjoys Hardanger, samplers with specialty stitches, and is a fiber addict. We hope you enjoy our conversation with Terri Bay.–Christine and Gary

Fiber Talk with Jenny Huff

The needlepoint club meets during lunch at Artesia High School.

This week we’re joined by Jenny Huff, a math teacher at Artesia High School in Lakewood, CA. She learned needlepoint basics from her mother-in-law while spending hours in a hospital while her husband was sick. Her students learned of her stitching hobby, got interested in learning how to stitch, then wanted to start a club. The club exploded and now has 70+ members, male and female, and meets for lunch three days a week. In the club’s three-year life, Jenny’s efforts have exposed hundreds of students

to stitching, giving them an outlet from the stresses of high-school life. This week we learn about the club, how it operates, and the differences it has made for students. Part of the club’s success has been the generosity of stitchers throughout the needlework community, primarily the folks at Mari Pat’s Needlework Shop in Long Beach, CA. We hope you enjoy our conversation with Jenny Huff.–Christine and Gary
