Fiber Talk with Anna Crutchley

Cords created by Anna Crutchley.
Tassels by Anna Crutchley
Passementerie, the art of creating tassels, trimmings, cords, and fringes, is our topic this week and our talented artist is Anna Crutchley. The passementerie Anna creates isn’t the simple cords we use to edge finished needlework. What Anna creates is a very different kind of fiber art that can be used to enhance other types of art or stand on its own. In the UK, passementerie is classified as an endangered art form with just a handful of people still practicing it. Anna shares some of the history of tassels and cords, how she became a leading creator and teacher, her book on the art form, and what is involved in making these items. We also gain some insight into using Anna’s four-hook cord spinner. Enjoy the show and explore Anna’s site to learn more.–Beth and Gary

We start the show with Rita teaching us how to pronounce bordado, the Portuguese word for embroidery. We have limited success. Then we move on to learn how Rita moved from crochet to thread painting and creating colorful portraits on printed fabrics, without the ability to draw. We talk about challenges of stitching various part of anatomy and her interesting stitching technique. Fiber Talk with Ruth Norbury

What Then is Time? by Ruth Norbury
Exit Eternity by Ruth Norbury
Ruth Norbury of Gothic Decay is our guest this week. The show is sponsored by Sassy Jacks Stitchery. Ruth creates her captivating textile art by starting with a reference photo, then building her ground cloth from scraps of fabric. Once the ground cloth is in place, she executes a series of steps that involve an old manual Singer sewing machine, dyes, stencils, stamp pads, and anything else that will give her the image she wants. Then follows an extensive amount of embroidery with lots of French and bullion knots and beads. Most of her materials come from a local thrift shop. This is textile art at its finest, created by someone who has no fear of the question, What if?–Beth and Gary
