Fiber Talk with Ana Luiza Catalano

Sandhill Crane by Ana Luiza Catalano.
Ana’s first attempt at a Gray-headed Tody-Flycatcher compared with the same bird three years later.
Thread-painting bird artist Ana Luiza Catalano joins us this week. The show is sponsored by the Embroiderers’ Guild of America. The pandemic led Ana, an ornithologist by profession, to add thread painting to her study of bird songs and calls. We learned about her through an EGA blog article, linked below, and had to learn more. In addition to studying birds in North America, Ana regularly travels to her native Brazil to spend extended periods studying birds in the Amazon Rain Forest. In our conversation we learn about her work, a lot about birds, and do a deep dive into stitching process and how she went from relative beginner to accomplished needleworker in less than four years. Did you know that birds have a song and a call? That birds have dialects? How to use the finger ring of your scissors to transfer a design to ground cloth? Those are just some of the things we covered in our conversation.–Beth and Gary

Fiber Talk with Lea Peacock

Class registration for the 2025 EGA Needlework Faire and Sampler University opens at noon Eastern, Sept. 10.
The new Sampler University event at the EGA National Seminar is open to members and non-members. Projects will be the oustanding Iesabella Kettlewell 1818 sampler, taught by Sylvia Stecker of Running with Needles & Scissors and a beautiful Sampler Sewing Roll, taught by Becky Nolan of Lucy Beam.
This week’s guest is Lea Peacock, newly elected president of the Embroiderers’ Guild of America. Thanks to Sassy Jacks Stitchery and Avlea Folk Embroidery for sponsoring the show. In our conversation we learn about Lea, her stitching interests, and her long history of EGA membership. She talks about exciting things the EGA is doing, and some upcoming activities, particularly the 2025 National Seminar. Of note is the new Sampler University, “an all-inclusive two-day sampler extravaganza featuring two popular artisans, two beautiful offerings, and other delights for EGA members and non-members.” The National Seminar, Needlework Faire, will be held Nov. 12 to 16, 2025 in Dallas. Registration for Sampler University and the 2025 Seminar classes opens at noon Eastern on Sept. 10, 2024. Lea also joined us for the Sept. 4, 2024, Fiber Talk Stitch Hour in which we reviewed all of the 2025 classes. The Seminar offers a stunning array of classes for needleworkers of all levels. We hope you enjoy our conversations with Lea and encourage you to join the EGA –Gary

Fiber Talk with Ann Beck

Ann Beck’s Nightbirds embroidery design.
Costume designed by Ann Beck for figure skater Brian Boitano.
This week’s show is sponsored by the Embroiderers’ Guild of America and Sassy Jacks Stitchery. Our conversation this week is with the amazing embroidery artist, Ann Beck. Ann has been doing embroidery in one form or another for most of her life. She spent most of her career in the fashion world, primarily creating and making costumes for performers such as members of the San Francisco Ballet and ODC/Dance San Francisco. She also has designed costumes for Olympic and World Champion figure skaters, specifically Brian Boitano, Kristi Yamaguchi, Dorothy Hamill, and Tara Lipinski. These days she’s shifted away from that world to focus on embroidery design and teaching. Ann is most excited about teaching her new design, Nightbirds, in April 2025, at a four-day workshop in the medieval city of Provins, just south of Paris. The workshop, offered by the embroidery tourism company Creative Experiences, will also include a three-day stay and shopping excursion in Paris and Versailles. Ann’s work is outstanding and it was fun to learn of her journey and what lies ahead for her.–Beth and Gary

Fiber Talk with Annette Boland

Floral Pocket kits by Annette Boland, The Woolen Needle.
Hello Summer design by Annette Boland.
Wool applique, dyeing wool, and all things related is our focus this week. The show is sponsored by the Embroiderers’ Guild of America and our guest is Annette Boland of The Woolen Needle. A wool applique class Beth did with Annette triggered this conversation. We simply had to know more about the technique and the beautiful wool materials that make it possible. Annette designs wool applique, quilts, hooked rugs, and punch needle art. She also dyes wool, offers some beautiful variegated threads and, in her spare time, runs a shop and teaches classes. No matter what your favorite stitching technique, wool applique will make a fun, creative, diversion when you simply want to try something different. If you’re one of those stitchers who also quilts, Annette has some designs you’re likely to enjoy. It’s a fun conversation with a talented artist and we hope it will show you something different in the needle arts world.–Beth and Gary

Fiber Talk with Sian Fish

Midnight Whispers design by Sian Fish.
The Dead Unicorn Society design by Sian Fish.

Blackwork is our topic this week and our guest is Sian Fish of The Urban Stitches. The show is sponsored by the Embroiderers’ Guild of America and Sassy Jacks Stitchery. Sian Fish is a self-taught stitcher and designer who loves to work in the macabre/gothic world of needlework design. But not all of her topics are focused on the “dark side.” She has a unique talent for putting a different twist on “regular” topics. No matter what the subject is, it’s almost alway worked on black or gray ground with black threads. She also does amazing work creating portraits with blackwork and regularly conducts popular SALs. Her work is quite unique in not only the world of blackwork, but in needlework design in general. After you enjoy our conversation, visit her website to learn more and consider participating in her SALs. They’re approachable for stitchers of all levels and will give you a chance to try blackwork.–Gary
