Fiber Talk Midweek Chat, 6-21-23

Stitched by M. A. Dewald

We’ve found the middle of the week and Cindy and Gary have gathered to talk about signing needlework, early stitching on Jane Turner and Gary, saving old/vintage techniques, bobbin lace, how our needlework will be viewed many years from now, if we could talk with the girls that made the samplers we stitch today, Gary’s sewing machine lack of progress, and entering projects in state fairs, along with some tips from Cindy. We’re going to take another short break and will return with a new show on July 9.–Cindy and Gary

Fiber Talk with Rae Niles

Isabella Roberts 1848 by Red Barn Samplers.
Use this device, from Red Barn Samplers, to store and display your hoop collection.

Our subject this week is reproduction samplers, specifically those produced by our guest, Rae Niles of Red Barn Samplers. Sassy Jacks Stitchery is sponsoring this week’s show and Kim’s shop is your source for Rae’s charts and the linen and thread you need to stitch them. In our conversation, we learn about the red barn that is behind the logo, the fascinating story of how Rae acquired a treasure trove of beautiful original samplers, and how she is making the most of “funtirement” to pursue her passion and make those samplers available to needleworkers. She’s early on in her sampler reproduction effort so there is a long parade of samplers yet to come. Rae also offers a unique solution for storing/displaying your embroidery hoops. Also, be sure to follow her on social media and make a point to enjoy her Flosstube videos. This is a sampler reproduction artist to watch carefully because she’s likely to make significant contributions to the sampler world in the coming years.–Beth and Gary

Fiber Talk with Lori Pengelly

Betsy’s Patchwork Baskets series by Lori Pengelly.
Pumpkin Dash quilt, designed by Lori Pengelly.

This week, in a show sponsored by Sassy Jacks Stitchery, we talk with Lori Pengelly of Pansy Patch Quilts and Stitchery. Lori is a needleworker, cross stitch designer, quilter, quilt designer, wool appliqué artist, combines needlework with her quilt designs, does hand quilting, owns a long-arm quilter and uses it for her own designs as well as offering it as a service, dyes threads, and is working with her daughter Emily to develop her own cross stitch designs. Somewhere in there, Lori finds time to eat and sleep, though that time is very limited. Our conversation touches on all of the things Lori does, along with her primitive color palette preferences and how she approaches new designs. Lori is also a strong supporter of local needlework stores and you can purchase her designs at your favorite needlework purveyor. Enjoy our conversation with Lori and be sure to watch for new designs coming in the the next few weeks.–Beth and Gary
