Fiber Talk with Brittany Kiertzner

Mixed-media and textile fine artist Brittany Kiertzner joins us this week. Her work in abstract embroidery transcends the boundaries of traditional stitching, creating a world of imaginative and evocative designs. Through a dynamic interplay of woven threads, Brittany’s work is influenced by traditional Mohawk splint basket making and subversion of materials through repurposing and synthesizing the past. Kiertzner exhibits regularly at the Ahmad Shariff Gallery and other art houses and keeps us a steady stream of creative art while raising three children under the age of five. Fiber Talk with Roberta Wagner

Roberta describes herself as an intuitive artist, which means she rarely starts with a plan. “Often, the idea behind my work is not apparent when I am making it. Rather, it’s an idea playing in my unconscious. Maybe it’s about time passage, or memories, what’s hidden from view, or grief. It’s only later, when the work is finished that I understand it.” In our conversation we explore that process and learn about the various materials she uses to create her art. One of the things we learn about is washi paper. Fiber Talk with Dawn Fisher

This week’s needle artist is Dawn Fisher of Morning Glory Needleworks. The show is sponsored by the Embroiderers’ Guild of America. Dawn’s love, passion, and specialty is reproducing antique samplers and her large collection contains some unique pieces. When she isn’t reproducing samplers, Dawn designs her own samplers, in addition to creating blackwork and whitework designs. Dawn also loves to teach needlework and does so regularly either live or online. A favorite teaching project is her popular button box. In our conversation we talk about the various aspects of Dawn’s stitching career and how she started Morning Glory Needleworks, shut it down to go to school, then renewed the business and made it her full-time love and occupation. At the end of the conversation we talk about a new design Dawn is finishing and will have available soon. Beth and Gary have claimed the first two copies, but there will be plenty for others.–Beth and Gary
