Fiber Talk with Rita Gaspar

Portrait by Rita Gaspar.
Rita Gaspar’s self portrait.

Rita Gaspar joins us from Portugal this week to talk about her captivating portrait embroidery. The show is sponsored by the Embroiderers’ Guild of America at egausa.org. We start the show with Rita teaching us how to pronounce bordado, the Portuguese word for embroidery. We have limited success. Then we move on to learn how Rita moved from crochet to thread painting and creating colorful portraits on printed fabrics, without the ability to draw. We talk about challenges of stitching various part of anatomy and her interesting stitching technique. Rita is a talented embroidery artist and it’s going to be fun to watch her art evolve in the coming years.–Beth and Gary

  1. A 4-ply cord twister is available from Lacis in the USA.
