Fiber Talk Midweek Chat, 4-10-24

Elizabethan Treasures from Linda Barry, considered by Jean to be one of the best whitework samplers ever published.

It’s Midweek Chat week and Beth and Gary connected through our respective internet providers to talk about eyeglasses and what we learned from Kelly Lea Teske, supporting Ukraine designer Ekaterina at stitchyprincess.etsy.com, selecting projects vs. being influenced by stitching friends, projects we have that need to be at the top of the pile, stitching in groups vs. alone, whether we could produce an exhibition with our finished pieces, stitching lights/magnifiers, group projects, choosing silk or metallic threads, and whether we would rather have talent or determination. Sunday’s guest is the Nashville Needlepointed, Lita O’Hara.–Beth and Gary

Fiber Talk with Robin Mayer

The Birdmen Cometh design from Little Robin Designs.
Grace Gill 1838 sampler from Little Robin Designs.

She creates top-flight cross stitch designs, reproduces intriguing antique samplers, designs original samplers, and has started designing punch-needle art. This week’s Fiber Talk guest is Robin Mayer of Little Robin Designs.  In addition to learning about her design approach, how she became addicted to samplers, and her preference for the primitive design style, we get some thread-storage ideas that might help all of us and will definitely help those whose needlework acquisitions have moved from stash to inventory. Robin also talks about her 2024 Nashville Market designs and her plans to deliver new designs throughout the year. Explore the Little Robin Designs website and purchase your favorites from your local needlework store.–Beth and Gary

Octopus design by Joana Augusto.
This week we are joined by the Cross Stitch Geek, Joana Augusto. The show is sponsored by Avlea Folk Embroidery and the new Folk Flourishes kits. Joana is a long-distance runner, scientist, and a cross-stitch designer who loves converting cross stitches into science-themed designs. In our conversation we learn about her origins in Portugal, moving to Canada, doing PhD research on pilot-whale behavior, and how she became a cross-stitch designer. She creates beautiful, approachable designs that stitchers at all skill levels will enjoy. After you enjoy our conversation, be sure to check out her Etsy shop to explore her creations.–Gary

Fiber Talk with Krista West II

Folk Flourishes designs by Krista West.
One of the Avlea work bag designs.
It’s been four years since we did a full interview with Krista West of Avlea Folk Embroidery and much as happened since that initial conversation. This show is sponsored by Sassy Jacks Stitchery, sassyjacksstitchery.com. When we first talked to Krista, Avlea was in its infancy. In the time that has passed, Krista has made Avlea into a significant contributor to the art of needlework, while carving out and establishing a niche for needlework that is used on a daily basis instead of framed and hung on a wall. The history and culture of her designs and color palette add yet another unique dimension to her work. In this conversation we learn about the Avlea journey since 2019, the new work bag kits, and Folk Flourishes, a new series of designs for garment embroidery. Wednesday, March 20, Krista will join us live for the Fiber Talk Stitch Hour to show some of her new designs, particularly the work bags and Folk Flourishes. Join us at 8:00 p.m. Eastern on the Fiber Talk YouTube channel.–Beth and Gary
