Fiber Talk with Christine Miller II

Scarlet Coral by Christine Miller
“Weaving with Wire” by Christine Miller

This week’s Fiber Talk show is sponsored by Sassy Jacks Stitchery. When we first talked with Christine Miller in Feb. 2022 about her weaving-with-wire art, she was in the early stages of writing a book. That book, “Weaving with Wire: Creating Woven Metallic Fabric,” is now available and Christine returns this week to talk about it. It’s a beautiful book that opens the door to exploring Christine’s textile art techniques. For non-weavers, the book contains a large section on art and the art-creation process. Weavers will want the book to help them take their weaving to a new level. Non-weavers will want to own the book because it will expand their creative horizons. Everyone will simply enjoy looking at Christine’s art. The book is available from your LNS or wherever books are sold. It’s a good addition to your library and we’re confident you’ll enjoy hearing how the book came to be.–Beth and Gary

Fiber Talk with Elizabeth Ashdown

Passementerie by Elizabeth Ashdown
Textile art by Elizabeth Ashdown.

This week we’re talking about passementerie art with Elizabeth Ashdown. The show is sponsored by Sassy Jacks Stitchery. Typically, when passementerie is discussed, the focus is on decorative trimming such as tassels, braids, and fringes. This time, we are taking the discussion to a whole new level because Elizabeth combines passementerie techniques, weaving, and thread dyeing to create a completely new world of textile art. In our conversation, we learn about her journey to develop this art form, how she goes about creating commissioned pieces, her teaching, and The Experimental Weave Lab, a fascinating venture that she hopes to repeat in the future. We also get a small tease of Elizabeth’s upcoming book. Enjoy the show and visit Elizabeth’s website to learn more about her textile-art world.–Beth and Gary

Fiber Talk with Anna Crutchley

Cords created by Anna Crutchley.
Tassels by Anna Crutchley
Passementerie, the art of creating tassels, trimmings, cords, and fringes, is our topic this week and our talented artist is Anna Crutchley. The passementerie Anna creates isn’t the simple cords we use to edge finished needlework. What Anna creates is a very different kind of fiber art that can be used to enhance other types of art or stand on its own. In the UK, passementerie is classified as an endangered art form with just a handful of people still practicing it. Anna shares some of the history of tassels and cords, how she became a leading creator and teacher, her book on the art form, and what is involved in making these items. We also gain some insight into using Anna’s four-hook cord spinner. Enjoy the show and explore Anna’s site to learn more.–Beth and Gary

Fiber Talk with Christine Miller

In Bloom by Christine Miller.
Christine Miller is our guest this week. She designs and teaches a wide variety of needlework techniques from embroidery to felting, dyeing, crochet, and sewing. These days, her focus is on weaving, but not regular weaving. Christine’s weaving uses “cloth” fibers and wire to create a fabric that opens many doors to design and sculpture. Christine has also played a major role in the drive to return the arts to our education system, basically changing STEM to STEAM. In addition to talking about her fiber arts work, we have an in-depth discussion about the importance of including arts in education. We’re confident our conversation will get your wheels spinning.–Beth and Gary

Fiber Talk with Virginia Postrel

The Fabric of Civilization by Virginia Postrel is a must read.

Virginia Postrel joins us this week. She is author of the book “The Fabric of Civilization: How Textiles Made the World.” This is a must-read book that will put a 180-deg. turn on your perspective of the role of fiber, thread, and cloth in the history of civilization. Virginia demonstrates, in a very enjoyable read, that fibers, which we tend to take for granted as we use them in our art/hobby activities, have been at the very core of the development of art, industry, and economics, essentially since humans appeared on this planet. We also learned some interesting things about weaving and dyeing. Virginia is a fascinating person who has built a career for herself sharing her perspective through columns, magazine articles, and several books. We’re confident you’ll enjoy the conversation we had with her and encourage you to pick up a copy of “The Fabric of Civilization.” It will get your wheels spinning.–Beth and Gary
