Fiber Talk with Jen Goodwin

Owl blackwork design by Jen Goodwin.
Reverse blackwork design by Jen Goodwin.

Blackwork is our topic this week, the Embroiderers Guild of America is sponsoring the show, and our guest is accomplished embroiderer and blackwork artist, Jen Goodwin of Jen Goodwin Embroidery. We had a delightful time talking with Jen and learning about her supportive parents, experiences with the Royal School of Needlework, and her own embroidery business. We also got to be jealous of her inspirational studio and work environment with several other artists in a repurposed flour mill that dates to the 1700s. On top of that, we discussed blackwork techniques in some depth and learned about her new book, “Blackwork Embroidery.” We’re confident you will enjoy the conversation and encourage you to visit Jen’s website and to join the EGA.–Beth and Gary

Fiber Talk Midweek Chat, 12-2-20

Spring HIll by Karen Kluba of Rosewood Manor. Our SAL, sponsored by Needle in a Haystack, will start Jan. 1

It’s the day after Tuesday and Beth and Gary have lots to talk about. We’re just about ready to go with our Jan. 1 SAL of the Rosewood Manor Springhill design. The SAL is sponsored by Needle in a Haystack and we’re offering four thread sets–the designed set of Sullivans threads and the three sets that Jenifer, Beth, and Gary are stitching. Kits will be available in the next few days from Needle in a Haystack. You can see what the three of us are stitching in the photos below. In conjunction with the SAL, we answer a listener question about the various factors involved in changing the called-for threads and ground cloth in a design. In addition, we talk about the linen and thread test kits offered by Needle in a Haystack, designed to help you decide what linen thread count and thread  combination gives you the coverage and look you want. We also update our discussion about using apps to organize needlework projects. We hope you enjoy the show. Sunday’s guest is Jen Goodwin of Jen Goodwin Embroidery.–Beth and Gary
