Fiber Talk with Sylvia Stecker

Sylvia Stecker of Running with Needles and Scissors joins us this week for a show sponsored by Sassy Jacks Stitchery and the Embroiderers’ Guild of America. Sylvia is an avid collector and reproducer of antique samplers. She’s lived in and visits Germany frequently so she brings a different view/experience to samplers than we usually see. Her “Beloved” reproduction is a true standout. Sylvia doesn’t stop at reproduction samplers. She also creates her own designs and has a very pleasing eye for her originals. Her button series is truly unique. Sylvia’s business is relatively new on the scene. She did her first Nashville Market this past spring and is already lining up designs for the 2024 market. Fiber Talk with Roberta Wagner

Roberta describes herself as an intuitive artist, which means she rarely starts with a plan. “Often, the idea behind my work is not apparent when I am making it. Rather, it’s an idea playing in my unconscious. Maybe it’s about time passage, or memories, what’s hidden from view, or grief. It’s only later, when the work is finished that I understand it.” In our conversation we explore that process and learn about the various materials she uses to create her art. One of the things we learn about is washi paper. You’ll also want to read Roberta’s book, “Come Walk With Me, Exploring Why Art Matters.” Exploring Roberta’s art and her approach to creating it was enlightening and it will make your wheels spin.–Beth and Gary

Fiber Talk with Christine Miller II

When we first talked with Christine Miller in Feb. 2022 about her weaving-with-wire art, she was in the early stages of writing a book. That book, “Weaving with Wire: Creating Woven Metallic Fabric,” is now available and Christine returns this week to talk about it. It’s a beautiful book that opens the door to exploring Christine’s textile art techniques. For non-weavers, the book contains a large section on art and the art-creation process. Weavers will want the book to help them take their weaving to a new level. Non-weavers will want to own the book because it will expand their creative horizons. Everyone will simply enjoy looking at Christine’s art. The book is available from your LNS or wherever books are sold.
