Fiber Talk with Lindsay Olson

Circular Sounds, interpretation of passive acoustics by Lindsay Olson.
Neutrinos, by Lindsay Olson.

This week we merge needlework and science through the talents of Lindsay Olson in a show sponsored by Sassy Jacks Stitchery and Avlea Mediterranean Folk Embroidery. Lindsay is a needle artist who had absolutely no science in her life and really wasn’t much interested. That all changed with a canoe trip down the Cal Sag Channel where she encountered an engineered waterfall built by the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District. “The process of finding out who built this structure and why led me to the world’s largest wastewater treatment plant in Stickney, IL. I suddenly realized that if I used my training as an artist, I could learn enough engineering to create art that tells the real story of water in a dense urban area. I actually fell in love with science in the middle of a waste water treatment plant” In our conversation we learn about that experience, her work at Fermi Lab and the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland, and as part of a scientific team on a research vessel studying sound in the Atlantic Ocean. Those experiences and how they’ve generated fascinating interpretive needle art make this a show you don’t want to miss.–Gary
