Fiber Talk with Jen Simonic

Loose Ends was created by Masey Kaplan (l) and Jen Simonic (r).
Beate’s dad received the finished sweater on his 99th birthday.

Loose Ends is a difference-making venture and our guest this week is co-founder Jen Simonic. The show is made possible by Sassy Jacks Stitchery. When people who do needlework and other forms of textile art and pass away or become incapacitated, Loose Ends can be there to finish the needlework project, knit the rest of the sweater, crochet the unfinished afghan, or make the top into a warm quilt that comforts those left behind. Even better is that you can volunteer to finish a piece for someone who is on the sad end of a life event. After you hear the story of Loose Ends, go to their website, download the information material, and share it in your community. Then sign up to be a finisher and become a bright spot for someone who is experiencing loss.–Beth and Gary

Fiber Talk with Kelly Lea Teske III

Cross stitch piece by Kelly Lea Teske.
Kelly combines embroidery and yo yo pieces in this textile art.
Kelly Lea Teske returns yet again. But this time, we talked about stitching instead of vision and eyeglasses. We had a great time talking about cross stitch, needlepoint, painted canvases, quilting, her recent quilting talks, rug hooking, slow stitching, English paper piecing, and making and using yo yo pieces. The show got a little long but we were having fun talking about stitching, so we let it roll. Kelly is a talented and versatile textile/needlework artist and you’ll likely learn some things from our conversation. If we did our jobs well, you’ll also be enabled to spend some money. We’re pretty sure we cost Kelly a few dollars.–Beth and Gary

Fiber Talk with Ana Luiza Catalano

Sandhill Crane by Ana Luiza Catalano.
Ana’s first attempt at a Gray-headed Tody-Flycatcher compared with the same bird three years later.
Thread-painting bird artist Ana Luiza Catalano joins us this week. The show is sponsored by the Embroiderers’ Guild of America. The pandemic led Ana, an ornithologist by profession, to add thread painting to her study of bird songs and calls. We learned about her through an EGA blog article, linked below, and had to learn more. In addition to studying birds in North America, Ana regularly travels to her native Brazil to spend extended periods studying birds in the Amazon Rain Forest. In our conversation we learn about her work, a lot about birds, and do a deep dive into stitching process and how she went from relative beginner to accomplished needleworker in less than four years. Did you know that birds have a song and a call? That birds have dialects? How to use the finger ring of your scissors to transfer a design to ground cloth? Those are just some of the things we covered in our conversation.–Beth and Gary
