Designing Smalls from the Iesabella Kettlewell Sampler

Beth did some special stitches to enhance some of the Iesabella Kettlewell sampler motifs.
Gary used a butterfly and an element from the border from Iesabella Kettlewell to make what will become a small pillow.
This week’s show is sponsored by the Embroiderers’ Guild of America and the 2025 EGA National Seminar, Needlework Faire, Nov. 11 to 16 in Dallas, Texas. All of the details are at egausa.org, then select the Events page. One of the features of the national seminar is a new event called Sampler U, a two-day event open to EGA members and non-members. Sampler U will feature two projects: A Sampler Sewing Roll taught by Becky Noland of Lucy Beam and the beautiful sampler Iesabella Kettlewell 1818, taught by Sylvia Stecker of Running with Needles and Scissors. Sylvia will teach the sampler as a whole and the technique of making smalls from sampler motifs. To illustrate this approach, Beth and Gary made their own smalls from the Iesabella Kettlewell sampler and those smalls are the subject of this week’s show. Enjoy the show, let us know your thoughts, and register soon for the EGA National Seminar and/or Sampler U at egausa.org.–Beth and Gary

Fiber Talk with Yvette Stanton IV

“Hardanger Filling Stitches,” Yvette Stanton’s latest book, is a treasure-trove of hardanger filling stitches.
Instructions for the impressive sampler are included in “Hardanger Filling Stitches.”
Yvette Stanton returns for the fourth time to talk about her latest book Hardanger Filling Stitches. The show is sponsored by the Embroiderer’s Guild of America. Be sure to check out the Through the Needle’s Eye galleries at the EGA website. Hardanger Filling Stitches is an impressive collection of 100 filling stitches and variations, all presented in Yvette’s superb style of easily followed step-by-step diagrams and instructions, grouped by stitch type. Maybe one of the most useful features of the book is the Filling Stitch Pictorial Index, which lets you quickly find the look you want and then turn to the instructions. In our conversation we learn how the book was put together, how it functions, and the value it provides needleworkers, particularly in concert with Yvette’s excellent Early-Style Hardanger book. There is no one better at the whitework technique and Yvette Stanton’s library of how-to books is unmatched. For U.S. listeners, your best source for the books is Sassy Jacks Stitchery, the official distributor for most of the catalog and provider of all of her books.–Beth and Gary

Fiber Talk with Melissa Galbraith

Melissa Galbraith will teach you how to make your shoes look like this.
Melissa has never seen a garment that couldn’t use a little embellishment.
Imagine what your plain Jane sneakers would look like if they had a scene embroidered on the sides. Melissa Galbraith did just that and she wrote a book about it to help you turn your canvas shoes into works of art. Melissa is our guest this week and the show is sponsored by Sassy Jacks Stitchery and the Embroiderer’s Guild of America. Melissa learned embroidery from her mother, advanced her skills while working a monotonous desk job, watched her stash outgrow her small apartment, and converted it all into a business. That business, MCreativeJ, offers embroidery designs (many to embellish clothing), live and online classes, a Domestika class and, so far, two books. In addition to her book, “DIY Embroidered Shoes,” Melissa has written “How to Embroidery Texture and Pattern,” an excellent guide to adding depth and visual movement to your needlework. Enjoy the conversation, then go dig in your closet and find some old, boring shoes to embellish. Beth has found a pair and is making plans. Gary doesn’t own boring shoes. Also, do some shopping at Sassy Jacks and join the EGA.–Beth and Gary

Fiber Talk with Isabella Strambio

Isabella Strambio
“Mindful Macrame” by Isabella Strambio will be released Jan. 10, 2025.
Macrame placemat by Isabella Strambio.

TwoMe, 12 crafts in 12 months, journaling, and macrame are the foundations of “Mindful Macrame,” a new book from this week’s guest, Isabella Strambio. The show is sponsored by Sassy Jacks Stitchery and the Embroiderers’ Guild of America. Isabella is one of many who left the corporate world because it was stifling her creativity. That creative side blossomed when, at the urging of friends, she started offering macrame classes. The result, to date, is four books, and a design business that energizes her. Integrated into that business is a strong thread of mental health, which is the focus of her latest book and much of our conversation. If you are looking for some moments of peace/sanity, your chosen craft and the techniques Isabella uses can help you. The book will be released Jan. 10 and can be pre-ordered now.–Beth and Gary
