Fiber Talk with Jeannette Tombaugh

Beyond the Moon by Jeannette Tombaugh.
Dreaming by Jeannette Tombaugh.

Needlepoint designer Jeannette Tombaugh of Mountain Peaks Studio is our guest this week. The show is sponsored by Cyberpointers and Sassy Jacks Stitchery. Jeanette is a versatile, talented creator of counted-canvas and painted-canvas needlepoint designs, along with stitch guides for painted canvases. She is also the resident canvas expert at A Stitching Shop in Denver. Jeannette teaches extensively and has offered classes through EGA, Cyberpointers, ANG, and NAN. In our conversation, we learn how her self-taught needlework and design skills have evolved, how she uses just about any technique and material that will help tell her design story, and what a day is like for a designer at her level. We also get to hear the story of a sampler collection at a Pennsylvania bed-and-breakfast and how it became a lecture for Jeannette and uncovered a family connection. We also hear the story of her “Beyond the Moon” design, inspired by Clyde Tombaugh, a distant cousin of Jeannette’s husband and discoverer of the planet Pluto. It was great fun talking with Jeannette and we are confident you’ll enjoy the conversation.–Beth and Gary

Fiber Talk Midweek Chat, 12-7-22

Beth’s lizard painted-canvas piece is nearing a finish.

The day in the middle has arrived and we have, once again, gathered to talk about our favorite subject. This week we discuss our holiday schedule, a notable schedule change in 2023, the return of Adjust-a-Frames ([email protected]), Beth’s fleece dyeing plans, Beth’s painted canvas progress and what’s she’s learned, our Jan. 1 Jenifer birthday celebration, 2023 stitching plans, and the question of whether needlework is art, hobby, or craft. No Stitch Hour tonight. Stitch Hour returns Dec. 14 with guest Natalie Dupuis. Sunday’s guest is Orna Willis and it’s a conversation you won’t want to miss.–Beth and Gary

Fiber Talk Midweek Chat, 7-14-21

Take Wing from Joanna Kabanoff of Mojo Stitches. Kits from Sassy Jacks at wetalkfiber.com/wing.
It’s the day in the middle and we have some big announcements. Probably the biggest is that Fiber Talk will be attending and broadcasting live shows, interviews, and exhibit tours from the EGA Seminar in Sept. We’re very excited to be able to share the event with those who can’t attend. We also will be celebrating World Embroidery Day on July 30 with a three hour stitch-and-chat show from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Eastern on the YouTube channel. Join us and three designers for some fun needlework conversation. Friday night at 8:00 p.m. on the YouTube channel, Beth and Gary will be doing a live show to talk about our painted-canvas projects. Tonight, on the Fiber Talk Stitch Hour, also at 8:00 p.m. on the YouTube channel, we’ll learn how to do needle lace with Carrie Noess. In addition, Beth and Gary talk about experimenting with threads, substituting when threads don’t work out, whether perfection is really that important, where we find joy in stitching, and how much we like the Adjust-A-Frame stretcher bars. We hope you enjoy the show and can participate in our upcoming events.–Beth and Gary

Beth is going to stitch this painted canvas.

Seven days have passed since we last did this Midweek Chat thing and time has given us more to talk about. This week Beth and Gary begin exploring painted-canvas needlepoint projects, talk about Gary’s studio progress, and talk about using historical art and designs in today’s needle arts. Are we being honoring those in the past? Being respectful? Keeping old things alive so history isn’t forgotten. No clear answer but a topic worth discussing. Sunday’s guest: Ekta Kaul–Beth and Gary
