Fiber Talk with Jen Simonic

Loose Ends was created by Masey Kaplan (l) and Jen Simonic (r).
Beate’s dad received the finished sweater on his 99th birthday.

Loose Ends is a difference-making venture and our guest this week is co-founder Jen Simonic. The show is made possible by Sassy Jacks Stitchery. When people who do needlework and other forms of textile art and pass away or become incapacitated, Loose Ends can be there to finish the needlework project, knit the rest of the sweater, crochet the unfinished afghan, or make the top into a warm quilt that comforts those left behind. Even better is that you can volunteer to finish a piece for someone who is on the sad end of a life event. After you hear the story of Loose Ends, go to their website, download the information material, and share it in your community. Then sign up to be a finisher and become a bright spot for someone who is experiencing loss.–Beth and Gary

Fiber Talk with the Eye Doctor

“Steampunk” glasses are a big help when specifying stitching glasses.
Lined tri-focals with an 8×35 magnification area are recommended for stitching glasses.
Kelly Lea Teske joins Gary this week to talk about Gary’s trip to the eye doctor to get new everyday glasses and lined-trifocal stitching glasses. In a show we did on April 6, 2024, we talked with Kelly about how stitchers should approach an eye doctor visit with the intention of getting glasses that will help with stitching. Gary followed Kelly’s advice and had an excellent experience with two of the three professionals involved. He had to stick to his guns when it came to actually specifying and purchasing the glasses, but it worked out. In this week’s show, we take you through the experience so you can be better informed the next time you visit the eye doctor. Huge thanks to Kelly for making time on short notice to do the show. Also note that Kelly is doing two talks at the Great Wisconsin Quilt show, Sept. 5 to 7 in Madison, WI. Go to quiltshow.com to get all of the details.–Kelly and Gary

Fiber Talk with Annette Boland

Floral Pocket kits by Annette Boland, The Woolen Needle.
Hello Summer design by Annette Boland.
Wool applique, dyeing wool, and all things related is our focus this week. The show is sponsored by the Embroiderers’ Guild of America and our guest is Annette Boland of The Woolen Needle. A wool applique class Beth did with Annette triggered this conversation. We simply had to know more about the technique and the beautiful wool materials that make it possible. Annette designs wool applique, quilts, hooked rugs, and punch needle art. She also dyes wool, offers some beautiful variegated threads and, in her spare time, runs a shop and teaches classes. No matter what your favorite stitching technique, wool applique will make a fun, creative, diversion when you simply want to try something different. If you’re one of those stitchers who also quilts, Annette has some designs you’re likely to enjoy. It’s a fun conversation with a talented artist and we hope it will show you something different in the needle arts world.–Beth and Gary

Fiber Talk with Lisa Call

Altura by Lisa Call.
Round and Round by Lisa Call

The stunning textile art of Lisa Call is our focus this week. Lisa grew up in Colorado in a creative environment. Creativity took a bit of a back seat when she chose computer science for a day job/career. An art museum tour connected her with abstract art and a move to New Zealand has allowed her to fully explore that art form. It’s fascinating to see how she uses the series approach to explore every aspect of a basic design. Equally interesting is how she puts limits on her approach to prevent getting bogged down in distractions. How do you tap into this creativity? Visit Lisa’s Make Big Art website and take a class. She’ll help you expand your horizons.–Gary

Fiber Talk with Lori Pengelly

Betsy’s Patchwork Baskets series by Lori Pengelly.
Pumpkin Dash quilt, designed by Lori Pengelly.

This week, in a show sponsored by Sassy Jacks Stitchery, we talk with Lori Pengelly of Pansy Patch Quilts and Stitchery. Lori is a needleworker, cross stitch designer, quilter, quilt designer, wool appliqué artist, combines needlework with her quilt designs, does hand quilting, owns a long-arm quilter and uses it for her own designs as well as offering it as a service, dyes threads, and is working with her daughter Emily to develop her own cross stitch designs. Somewhere in there, Lori finds time to eat and sleep, though that time is very limited. Our conversation touches on all of the things Lori does, along with her primitive color palette preferences and how she approaches new designs. Lori is also a strong supporter of local needlework stores and you can purchase her designs at your favorite needlework purveyor. Enjoy our conversation with Lori and be sure to watch for new designs coming in the the next few weeks.–Beth and Gary
