Fiber Talk with Susan Fay Schauer John

Kingfisher textile art by Susan Fay Schauer John.
Owl textile art by Susan Fay Schauer John.

Susan Fay Schauer John is a terrific textile artist and artist in general and is partnering with Gail Patterson to create the Spiralis Gallery. She’s also our guest this week in a show sponsored by Sassy Jacks Stitchery. For Susan it was a decision between science and art. Art won, hands down, and we are the beneficiaries. Her art career includes wood turning, oil painting, and colored-pencil “painting.” But she found her home when she started using pieces of cloth to create a base and detailed free-form sewing to bring her subjects to life. The result is captivating art. Susan’s art will be exhibited in the newly established Zebra Gallery, which will be co-located with the Spiralis Gallery in Easton, MD. Susan and Gail Patterson (Fiber Talk, 10-8-23) are partners in the Spiralis Gallery. The grand opening for these galleries is Nov. 3, 2023 and the premiere exhibition will be “Woman, Phenomenally.” The opening reception will be Oct. 28 at 4:30 p.m. Eastern and feature an artist talk by Ernesto Beckford. We hope you enjoy this week’s show, invite to listen to last week’s conversation with Gail Patterson, and encourage you to visit the Spiralis and Zebra Galleries when you’re next in Maryland.–Gary

Fiber Talk Midweek Chat, 10-11-23

Clara Warschauer’s goldwork frog.
It’s midweek chattin’ day and we’ve gathered to talk about EGA Virtual Lectures, Gary’s sampler progress, Jenifer’s new Under the Garden Moon class/project, Clara Warschauer’s frog goldwork project, temari stitching, learning from teachers/classes, making French knots, and the importance of stash storage space. Overrated/underrated topics this week are kits, Mary Corbet, and thread bobbins and drops. In the discussion, you may pick up on the fact that Jenifer is not a fan of thread drops. Sunday’s guest is textile artist Susan Fay Schauer John.–Jenifer and Gary
