Fiber Talk with Alison Cole II

Epaulet detail from the suit of lights in Alison Cole’s collection.

Well-executed goldwork is jaw-dropping, whether you have a clue about needlework or not. It also often intimidating to needleworkers who are considering giving it a go. No need to fear. Alison Cole returns this week with a new book, “The Goldwork Masterclass,” and some words of advice that will eliminate your apprehension and give you all of the information you’ll need to have success with the technique (Pre-order pricing is in effect for a short while at Alison’s website and, for U.S. people, at the Stitching Shop in Denver). We also get to learn a good deal of goldwork history and about Alison’s goldwork-antique collection, including her amazing suit of lights. If you’re not already, you’ll be tempted to try goldwork after listing to the show.–Gary

  1. Alison referred to a tool “Miller?” that she used for laying gold threads, is there a picture or supply for this tool? Also, could you clarify the book she referred to by Jackie Carey—Elizabethan Stitches?? Thank you

    1. Hi Vickie – I think the tool mentioned is called a mellor. You can do a Google search and see lots of pics. And the book is called Elizabethan Stitches and it’s by Jacqui Carey.

      Hope that helps!

  2. Hi Vickie, I can answer those questions for you. A Mellor is a little bone or metal tool – One end is flat and rounded like an ice lolly stick, the other is a slightly rounded point. Jacqui Carey’s book is available from her online shop http://www.careycompany.com
    (And it’s a great book.)
