Cords created by Anna Crutchley.Tassels by Anna CrutchleyPassementerie, the art of creating tassels, trimmings, cords, and fringes, is our topic this week and our talented artist is Anna Crutchley. The passementerie Anna creates isn’t the simple cords we use to edge finished needlework. What Anna creates is a very different kind of fiber art that can be used to enhance other types of art or stand on its own. In the UK, passementerie is classified as an endangered art form with just a handful of people still practicing it. Anna shares some of the history of tassels and cords, how she became a leading creator and teacher, her book on the art form, and what is involved in making these items. We also gain some insight into using Anna’s four-hook cord spinner. Enjoy the show and explore Anna’s site to learn more.–Beth and Gary

Wednesday is a favorite because we get to talk about needlework. In this week’s show we remember Jean Lea, talk about a Valentine’s Day registration offer for the Fiber Talk Needle Arts retreat, discuss our attempts to stitch every day and what projects are in the rotation, look at some casket stitching, enjoy some Gay […]
The passing of Jean Lea will leave a huge void in the needlework world, particularly for those who love, reproduce, and stitch samplers. In addition to being a terrific person, Jean was widely known as the owner of The Attic, one of the few true destination needlework shops. Anyone who spent any time with her […]
The life of a military wife, living in upstate New York, and the pandemic catalyzed Caroline Gilman’s interest in needlepoint. Our conversation with Caroline is sponsored by Avlea Folk Embroidery and the Fiber Talk Needle Arts Weekend. During those hours in New York, Caroline found her home with painted-canvas needlepoint. It wasn’t long before she […]
We’re at the center of the week and Cindy and Gary have fired up the recording gear to talk about a new one-day option for the Fiber Talk retreat (wetalkfiber.com/weekend); request for questions for upcoming shows; Gary keeping up with Beth’s Stitch Every Day challenge; storing slate frames, scroll rods, and stretcher bars; marking stretcher […]
Imagine what your plain Jane sneakers would look like if they had a scene embroidered on the sides. Melissa Galbraith did just that and she wrote a book about it to help you turn your canvas shoes into works of art. Melissa is our guest this week and the show is sponsored by Sassy Jacks […]
I’m a big fan of the Lacis IG05 Cord Maker & Fringe Twister II, a battery-powered 4-hook cord maker. I’ve made lots of cords with it. You can buy it directly from lacis.com but it’s often cheaper on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Lacis-IG05-Fringe-Twister-II-2-4/dp/B018HBN960/
(At the moment it’s under $25 on Amazon, vs $30 at Lacis.)
Lacis also sells a ton of other useful items for making tassels and cords: https://lacis.com/catalog/
