This week we visit with Gemma Murray, Anne Butcher, and Dr. Susan Kay-Williams of the Royal School of Needlework. These ladies were responsible for managing all of the needlework that was done for the Coronation of King Charles III a year ago. In our conversation, we learn about the various aspects of the work that was done at the RSN from restoration to creation of new pieces. This week’s show was recorded as a video so we could show photos of the embroidery as we talked about the pieces. That video is available below and on the Fiber Talk YouTube page. Also on this page is a slide show of the images we discussed, in the order in which they were presented. We hope you enjoy this look at the work that was involved in preparing embroidered pieces for the historic Coronation. If you want to buy the book, “An Unbroken Thread,” by Dr. Susan Kay-Williams, that includes the chapter on the RSN’s Coronation work, you can find sources at accartbooks.com.–Beth and Gary

Fiber Talk with Dr. Susan Kay-Williams & Dr. Isabella Rosner, RSN

Dr. Susan Kay-Williams, Executive Director of the Royal School of Needlework, returns this week, along with RSN Curator Dr. Isabella Rosner, in a show sponsored by Sassy Jacks Stitchery. Our topic for this sixth visit from the folks at the Royal School is digitizing the entire Royal School of Needlework collection. This is the second, along with the RSN Stitch Bank, project that promises to significantly change the knowledge base needleworkers have at their disposal. Even more valuable is that the digitized collection and the RSN Stitch Bank will be connected in many ways. Maybe the best part is that these two monumental resources will be freely available to all needleworkers. In our conversation, we learn how this project got started, the vast amount of information that will be available, and when we’ll start seeing items from the collection. As with all other RSN activities, it pays to have your name on the school’s mailing list so you can keep up to date. To communicate with Isabella about this effort, you can send email to collection at royal-needlework.org.uk. Applause once again to the Royal School for its leadership role in educating needleworkers of all types and at all skill levels. Also, enjoy photos of items from the RSN Collection in the slideshow below.–Beth and Gary

Fiber Talk with RSN’s Dr. Susan Kay-Williams and Jacqui McDonald

A page from the RSN Stitch Bank.
Jacqui McDonald’s filming/photography setup.

Dr. Susan Kay-Williams, Chief Executive, and Jacqui McDonald, RSN Tutor and Stitch Bank Developer, of the Royal School of Needlework, join us this week in a show sponsored by Sassy Jacks Stitchery and the Embroiderers’ Guild of America. In our discussion, we look at pandemic-driven changes at the RSN that are going to expand global access to the many programs they have to offer. The big excitement, and the primary focus of the show, is the upcoming RSN Stitch Bank and accompanying Adopt a Stitch Campaign. Jacquie MacDonald is managing this new effort and it promises to be one of the best resources available to needleworkers of all types and skill levels. Adopting a stitch is quite affordable and maybe something your group might consider. Enjoy the show and make some time to explore the educational opportunities offered by the Royal School of Needlework.–Gary
