Fiber Talk with Krista West II

Folk Flourishes designs by Krista West.
One of the Avlea work bag designs.
It’s been four years since we did a full interview with Krista West of Avlea Folk Embroidery and much as happened since that initial conversation. This show is sponsored by Sassy Jacks Stitchery, sassyjacksstitchery.com. When we first talked to Krista, Avlea was in its infancy. In the time that has passed, Krista has made Avlea into a significant contributor to the art of needlework, while carving out and establishing a niche for needlework that is used on a daily basis instead of framed and hung on a wall. The history and culture of her designs and color palette add yet another unique dimension to her work. In this conversation we learn about the Avlea journey since 2019, the new work bag kits, and Folk Flourishes, a new series of designs for garment embroidery. Wednesday, March 20, Krista will join us live for the Fiber Talk Stitch Hour to show some of her new designs, particularly the work bags and Folk Flourishes. Join us at 8:00 p.m. Eastern on the Fiber Talk YouTube channel.–Beth and Gary

Fiber Talk with Dawn Cook Ronningen II

“Sewing Rolls, Needle Rolls and Huswifs by Dawn Cook Ronningen
Orphan roll detail from Dawn Cook Ronningen’s collection.
Dawn Cook Ronningen, the Collector with a Needle, joins us this week for the second time to talk about her new book, “Sewing Rolls, Needle Rolls and Huswifs.” This week’s show is sponsored by Sassy Jacks Stitchery at sassyjacksstitchery.com and Avlea Folk Embroidery at avleaembroidery.com. Dawn’s new book is a fascinating look into sewing rolls and huswifs, once a primary part of every woman’s and soldier’s daily assemblage of tools. It’s most interesting to learn how these devices were made, used and, in many cases, passed down from generation to generation. We talk about the various types of cloth that were used, the limited instructions that were provided, and what was involved in basic and advanced designs. Be sure to visit Dawn’s online channels as she rolls out patterns so you can make your own and purchase her book, along with her previous book “Antique American Needlework Tools,” from Sassy Jacks Stitchery, direct from Dawn’s Etsy shop, or from your favorite local needlework store.–Beth and Gary

Fiber Talk with Stephanie Bishop

One of the many steps involved in dyeing fabric.

One of the fun aspects of starting a new project is selecting the ground cloth. There are so many options available to stitchers and one of the more creative providers is this week’s guest, Stephanie Bishop of Fabrics by Stephanie. This week’s show is sponsored by the Embroiderers’ Guild of America and Avlea Mediterranean Folk Embroidery. In our conversation, we learn how Stephanie got started with the art of dyeing fabric, get a sense of what’s involved in creating ground cloth, gain some insight into the struggles providers are experiencing getting materials during the pandemic, and find out where some of her fabric names originated. We hope you enjoy learning about the world of ground-cloth dyeing.–Beth and Gary
