Fiber Talk with Deb Rucker

Deb Rucker’s Woodlawn award-winning design.
Deb Rucker exhibition materials.

Our focus for this first Sunday of Black History Month is Afrocentric needlework and our guest is Deb Rucker of Stitches of Heritage. Sassy Jacks Stitchery is our sponsor and to help recognize Black History Month, Sassy Jacks is offering a free pdf download of the Sassafras Samplers Rosa Parks portrait sampler. To obtain your free copy, go to sassyjacksstitchery.com and scroll down on the home page until you see the image of Rosa Parks. Deb Rucker has extensively studied African American history with a focus on the role needlework has played since slaves were brought to the U.S. She also is an active designer/stitcher of representation artwork that raises awareness of racism in today’s culture. Our conversation and her experiences are educational and extremely enlightening. It was a true pleasure to talk about this important subject with Deb. Toward the end of the conversation, we talk about the websites diversityinstitching.com and lordlibidan.com. They are two websites you should bookmark and diversityirstitching.com is one you should visit frequently. Lots of talent at that site. Huge thanks to Deb for making the time to share her knowledge and experiences with us.–Gary

Fiber Talk with The School of Needlework for Disobedient Women

Stitching and talking at a School of Needlework for Disobedient Women meeting.
Student stitching at the Disobedient Women school.

This week we talk with Cecelia Rhoden and Kiana Mahjub, founders of the School of Needlework for Disobedient Women. The show is sponsored by the Embroiderers’ Guild of America and Avlea Folk Embroidery. The school is an excellent, forward-thinking program for teenage girls that provides them with a place to escape school and challenging life situations, relax and share with fellow students, meet new teenagers, make new friends, recoup from pandemic isolation, and develop social skills. Connecting all of them is needle and thread. A large number of sponsors/supporters/grant agencies have made this effort possible and Cecelia and Kiana hope the program soon will be offered to others in the needlework community so that other teenagers can benefit. These folks have worked with the ladies to make the program possible: The Kentucky Foundation For Women, Badass Crossstitch (Shannon Downey), Peg + Awl Public House, Rebel Rebel Studio & Lounge, First Friday Berea, The Stay Project, Erica Chambers Photography, Berea Kids Eat, and Native Bagel Co. The school is an excellent program that demonstrates the power of the needlearts.–Gary

The Harmony Casket, developed by Tricia Nguyen.

Patricia Nguyen of Thistle Threads returns this week in a show sponsored by Sassy Jacks Stitchery. Our topics this week are perfection being the enemy of good/progress, the impact of social media on needlework expectations, learning from classes without being overwhelmed, and what causes women to lack confidence in their needlework. It’s a thought-provoking conversation and we encourage you to share it with your stitching friends.–Beth and Gary

Fiber Talk with Clare Hunter II, Encore

Miao embroidery from the book Threads of Life.

During our holiday break, we offer an encore of the second show we did with Clare Hunter, author of “Threads of Life.” In this show, sponsored by Sassy Jacks Stitchery, we talk with Clare about the inspiration behind her book, the work that went into assembling all of the historical information, writing a history book and making it easy to read, and some of the people who helped make it possible. We also gain some additional insight into some of the people and historical events she experienced while writing “Threads of Life.”–Gary
