One of the panels on Genie Posnett’s casket.Interior lid of Mary Barry’s casket. This week we have a special Fiber Talk show, sponsored by Sassy Jacks Stitchery. For some time Beth has been wanting to do a show about caskets. It took a bit of effort but we think we came up with the right format and are more than confident Beth found the right guests. This week’s show is a video-only program and our guests are skilled casket makers Mary Barry and Genie Posnett. The objective of the show is to share what’s involved in stitching a casket and, in Genie’s case, all that goes into designing and stitching a history-based casket. We cover a wide range of stitching topics that apply to needleworkers at all levels and hope we inspire you to tackle that challenging project you want to attempt but are not convinced you can handle. We hope you’ll take the time to enjoy our conversation and share it with your stitching friends.–Beth and Gary

Ann Beck’s Nightbirds embroidery design.Costume designed by Ann Beck for figure skater Brian Boitano. This week’s show is sponsored by the Embroiderers’ Guild of America and Sassy Jacks Stitchery. Our conversation this week is with the amazing embroidery artist, Ann Beck. Ann has been doing embroidery in one form or another for most of her life. She spent most of her career in the fashion world, primarily creating and making costumes for performers such as members of the San Francisco Ballet and ODC/Dance San Francisco. She also has designed costumes for Olympic and World Champion figure skaters, specifically Brian Boitano, Kristi Yamaguchi, Dorothy Hamill, and Tara Lipinski. These days she’s shifted away from that world to focus on embroidery design and teaching. Ann is most excited about teaching her new design, Nightbirds, in April 2025, at a four-day workshop in the medieval city of Provins, just south of Paris. The workshop, offered by the embroidery tourism company Creative Experiences, will also include a three-day stay and shopping excursion in Paris and Versailles. Ann’s work is outstanding and it was fun to learn of her journey and what lies ahead for her.–Beth and Gary

“Everyday Folk” is a new book from Krista West of Avlea Folk Embroidery.Krista West of Avlea Folk Embroidery joins us this week to talk about her new book, “Everyday Folk.” The words on the cover describe the book as containing “Over 175 folk embroidery designs for the home, inspired by traditional textiles.” The book absolutely contains those designs, but its true value is as a “tool” that will help you create your own designs or modify designs from others and make them yours. It also offers detailed instructions that will help you finish your pieces by yourself. In our conversation, we talk about how the book came to be, what it contains, and how you can use it to advance your stitching. This book is an excellent resource that should be in the library of any needleworker.–Beth and Gary

The passing of Jean Lea will leave a huge void in the needlework world, particularly for those who love, reproduce, and stitch samplers. In addition to being a terrific person, Jean was widely known as the owner of The Attic, one of the few true destination needlework shops. Anyone who spent any time with her […]
