This week’s Midweek Chat is a new video Gary recorded with talented needlepointer Mary McGuire. In the video Gary and Mary discuss Mary’s 10 favorite threads and look at the effects they have in several needlepoint designs and painted canvases. Mary’s favorites are Petite Very Velvet, Impressions, Gloriana silks, Threadworx overdyed floss, Vineyard silk, Petite Sparkle Rays, DMC Floche, Watercolors and Wildflowers, DMC Perle Cotton, and Kreinik metallics. We hope you enjoy this thread exploration and will maybe identify one or two you’d like to try on your next project.–Christine and Gary
Our guest this week is Debbie Woodard owner of Painted Pony Designs. Debbie began designing needlepoint in 1989, after working for several years in a needlepoint shop in Austin, TX. The company name reflects her love of art and design and her original goal which was to use the money she made from her original designs to fulfill her childhood dream of purchasing a horse. She realized that dream in 2000 when she purchased Dandy as a Christmas gift for her daughter, Christina.
In our conversation with Debbie we talk about how her company started, the many canvases the company offers, their trunk-show program, and Destination Dallas, an annual trade show partially owned by Debbie. We hope you enjoy listening to the conversation as much as we enjoyed participating in it. Be sure to look for Painted Pony Designs canvases in your local needlework store.–Gary and Christine

This week’s guest is Abigail Timmis. Abby is a hand embroiderer, needlepoint canvas designer, needlepointer, embroidery instructor, and lover of all things handmade. She has studied at the Royal School of Needlework where, will designing needlework, she realized she needed and wanted more formal training and decided to pursue a degree in illustration. She now creates and offers needlepoint and embroidery designs through her Abigail Cecile website. Abby tells us that, “While embroidery is finally gaining popularity, needlepoint is still fairly obscure with millennials. It’s my goal to not only create beautiful and attractive designs (while still being rooted in the gorgeous history of needlework) but also to educate crafters and needlepointers alike.” We hope you enjoy our conversation with the very talented Abigail Timmis.–Christine and Gary

During the show, Abby offered two recommendations:
This week we have the pleasure of talking with Brooke Thorn McGowan and Tess Nagle, the talented needlepoint designers who make up Tess and Thorn. Tess and Brooke describe themselves as “young bloods on a stitching mission.” We had a riveting conversation about how they got started, their approach to stitching, inspirations and deeper meaning behind their canvases, and their ongoing efforts to introduce younger people to needlepointing. We also got to learn about their design and canvas-painting process and how they work together from two locations. These are two talented and enthusiastic ladies who are definitely injecting young blood into the hobby.–Christine and Gary
