Fiber Talk with Cindy Lee Gershin

Original Hardanger design by Cindy Gershin.
Golden Captured Heart by Cindy Gershin

Avlea Mediterranean Folk Embroidery is sponsoring this week’s show with Cindy Lee Gershin. The objective of the show is to provide needleworkers with insights from a veteran needlework judge. You’ll learn what matters and doesn’t matter when judges evaluate needlework, common errors/flaws, and how to evaluate your finished work to reduce the chance that you missed something. We also talk about finishing projects and discuss that well-worn topic of glass or no glass. As a companion to this podcast, Cindy will join us for the July 28 Stitch Hour to show examples of good and flawed needlework and to answer your questions. Join us at 8:00 p.m. on the Fiber Talk YouTube channel to learn more about how to improve your needlework.–Gary

Encore: Fiber Talk with Jenny Adin-Christie

Passiflora in stump work by Jenny Adin-Christie.

Moving day is tomorrow. We’ll be in our new place Wednesday and Fiber Talk will be back to our regular full schedule Wednesday, June 16 with Gary and Beth doing the podcast and Carrie Noess demonstrating needle lace during the Stitch Hour. This week, enjoy an encore presentation of the conversation Gary had with the remarkable Jenny Adin-Christie. Since we recorded the conversation, she’s done some amazing needlework. Follow her on Instagram to see some of it.

Here’s the original podcast: This week I’m joined by Jenny Adin-Christie. She is a graduate of the Royal School of Needlework and a veteran teacher at the school. Her primary needlework efforts these days involve creating her own designs and teaching all over the world, along with regular classes in her own studio. She also is a regular contributor to Inspirations magazine. Most of her work involves various combinations of whitework, stumpwork, and goldwork. Enjoy my conversation with one of the standout talents in the needle-arts community.–Gary

Fiber Talk with Susan Hoekstra of NETA

King’s Pineapple by NETA teacher Kathy Andrews.

Susan Hoekstra, president of the National Embroidery Teachers Association (NETA), joins us this week to discuss what this resource-rich organization has to offer needleworkers and needlework groups. NETA provides skilled teachers for a vast array of stitching techniques and can help your group enrich your annual program. Not part of a group but want to know who is teaching a technique? NETA can help you find a teacher so you can join an online presentation or ghost a class. This week we also talk about common flaws needlework judges find in stitching and how to correct them. Be sure to add NETA to your list of educational resources.–Beth and Gary

Fiber Talk with RSN’s Dr. Susan Kay-Williams and Jacqui McDonald

A page from the RSN Stitch Bank.
Jacqui McDonald’s filming/photography setup.

Dr. Susan Kay-Williams, Chief Executive, and Jacqui McDonald, RSN Tutor and Stitch Bank Developer, of the Royal School of Needlework, join us this week in a show sponsored by Sassy Jacks Stitchery and the Embroiderers’ Guild of America. In our discussion, we look at pandemic-driven changes at the RSN that are going to expand global access to the many programs they have to offer. The big excitement, and the primary focus of the show, is the upcoming RSN Stitch Bank and accompanying Adopt a Stitch Campaign. Jacquie MacDonald is managing this new effort and it promises to be one of the best resources available to needleworkers of all types and skill levels. Adopting a stitch is quite affordable and maybe something your group might consider. Enjoy the show and make some time to explore the educational opportunities offered by the Royal School of Needlework.–Gary
