Fiber Talk with Debbie Rowley

Debbie Rowley’s Angles teaching design.

Debbie Rowley is one of the top charted-canvas needlepoint designers in the hobby and it’s always a treat to have a conversation with her. She joins us once again and we talk about trestle needles, the Needle Arts Mystery Retreat, Shining Needle Society, videos, and several other stitching topics. Listeners also have a chance to win a set of Hands Across The Sea greeting cards by helping us make a list of good movies that you can watch while stitching without having to look up all of the time. 1. Hey Gary and Christine: Glad that Christine is feeling better!!! I guess one of my favorite movies that I can stitch by is Braveheart. It does have a lot of “battle” action, but usually the battles are the same. I have seen it a lot of times, so am no longer surprised by the outcomes. Great Podcast!!!

  2. I rotate through Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, The Hunger Games, and the Divergent series. Sometime I throw in a musical.

Glad Christine is feeling better. I hope she is back to full function soon.

  3. Lord of the Rings, Singin’ in the Rain, Indiana Jones, Godfather movies, historical movies (lots of talking!) And documentaries are great too.

Glad you’re on the mend, Christine 😊

  4. Hi Gary and Christine, I enjoy watching many movies over and over. A favorite is Fargo, as well as the Godfather series and as you enjoy, Hunt for Red October…always a favorite.
I also enjoy the Sum of All Fears.
I do have to tell you though, I really enjoy listening to your podcasts while I stitch…it’s very relaxing as well as informative.
    Thank you!

  5. Really enjoyed the podcast. One of DebBee’s designs was my first needlepoint piece. Glad Christine is feeling better. My movies would be Hunt for Red October, any of the Indiana Jones movies, or any of the Sean Connery or Roger Moore James Bond movies.

  6. Glad Christine is feeling better. I like watching the Lord of the Rings-read the books and have seen the movies so many times, it makes a great background noise. But now I am all into the Flosstube stitch a long with me videos. Just saying…
Also, I was going through my old Needle Pointers magazines (American Needlepoint Guild) while listening today and found a design by Debbie Rowley called Baskets, Blooms, and Butterflies. It is in the May 2015 issue. It is beautiful.

  7. I’m almost always watching “Downton Abbey” while I’m stitching.

  8. Another fantastic podcast. Christine I’m so glad you are feeling better! I love You’ve Got Mail – it is my ultimate comfort movie and fantastic and uplifting to stitch by!

  9. Hi Gary and Christine! Movies that I can watch while stitching are Titantic (seen it 100 times!), Nottinghill, Love Actually, and Shawshank Redemption. Hope you are having a great day!

  10. Hi Gary and Christine-
Glad to hear Christie is feeling better. I really enjoyed Debbie as a guest again. I love her designs.

One of my favorite movies in general (and also to stitch to), is Shawshank Redemption. I also like to watch British dramas such as Downton Abbey and the dramatizations of Jane Austen, the Bronte sisters and similar novels.

    Keep up the great work!
    Nancy

  11. Glad to hear you both back on the show. You made me laugh when you talked about stitching to a show you have watched before. I thought I was the only one who did this. One of my favorite TV series to stitch to is Downton Abbey. A long series that I have seen a few times easy to follow and stitch.

  12. I have the trolley needle Gary is describing. I used a pliers to make a bigger size, and then lines the inside with moleskin (adhesive backed padding like you use for sore feet). It’s nice and soft, but looks a little funny.

  13. Any Hercule Poirot movies would be my go to while stitching.

Thanks, Debbie, for reminding us that younger stitchers, stitchers with a lot of family obligations, and stitchers with limited resources can be as avid and great for the industry overall, as any other sector in the stitching world population.

  14. I like musicals, especially comical ones that I have seen over and over like The Blues Brothers, or oldies such as Singing In the Rain. Older movies like The Great Race or Those Magnificent Men In Their Flying Machines also get a run.

  15. If I find A Few Good Men on tv, I cannot turn the channel. A good stitching movie for me because I never have to look up. And I only watch the edited for tv version. 😬

  16. Christine, I am so happy you are feeling better.

I love to watch Jane Austen movies when I am stitching. I especially love the 1995 BBC version of Pride and Prejudice. (I am sure I have found every version of P and P that is available.)

I always enjoy your podcasts , and they make my daily commute much more bearable.

  17. Hi Gary and Christine
Here’s my list – Pretty Woman, Top Gun, Love Actually, Sleepless in Seattle, It’s Complicated, Chicago, Braveheart, Rob Roy and The Queen.

    Happy Stitching.

  18. My go to movies while stitching are any Star Trek movies and classics like The Wizard of Oz, Of Mice and Men and The Grapes of Wrath.
But the bulk of my stitching is done while “watching” any of the Star Trek series; nothing soothes the soul better than Cap. Picard’s voice! lol

  19. Love to listen each week, and glad to hear that Christine is on the mend, the movies I like to stitch to include any of the Ken Burns documentaries, as the narrators’ voices are very soothing. I also agree with the Indiana Jones movies as I have seen them so many times I do not need to focus to know what is happening. Thanks!

  20. I love your podcasts! I think good movies to stitch to are Sweet Home Alabama and the Goonies!

  21. I am a little late to the party. I love to watch Dirty Dancing, and Sound of Music. The music entertains me as much as the movie. Love the podcast.
