Fiber Talk with Cath Janes

Heart by Cath Janes.
Baby by Cath Janes.
Our guest this week is Cath Janes of Kraken Kreations and the show is sponsored by Sassy Jacks Stitchery, your source for all of the new Nashville releases. When it comes to Cath Janes, it’s hard to tell what is more impressive; her needlework and use of color or her amazing ability to accurately represent anatomical structures with needle and thread. In addition to her needlework talent, Cath’s journey is another example of the power of needle and thread to help deal with factors such as ADHD, postpartum depression, and multiple surgeries. In our conversation, we also talk about commission work and what it was like when professional medical illustrators included Cath’s creations among the best in the medical field.–Beth and Gary

Fiber Talk with Beth Hoyes

Lacewing butterfly embroidery by Beth Hoyes.
Pheasant feathers by Beth Hoyes.

This week we are joined by Beth Hoyes of Rabbit Hat Designs in a show sponsored by Avlea Folk Embroidery (avlea embroidery.com). Beth is an art therapist who recently moved to Colorado from the UK. Nature is what inspires Beth’s embroidery/needlepainting art, with a focus on the colors, shapes, and lines that occur when you close in on feathers, wings, and other animal body parts. Beth’s business is also very centered on offering sustainable products and packaging. We also learn about Beth’s upcoming book, “Beautiful Birds,” which will be available in June 2022. The book will offer instructions and 12 bird designs. It’s a terrific conversation with an energetic and talented needlework artist. After you listen to the show, take a few minutes to visit the Rabbit Hat Designs website to see all of Beth’s works.–Beth and Gary

Fiber Talk with Victoria Matthewson

Victoria Matthewson’s new book “Needlepainted Plants and Pollinators.”
A design from Victoria Matthewson’s new book.

Appreciation for pollinators has grown dramatically in recent years, along with increased sensitivity to widespread use of pesticides. Through her new book, “Needlepainted Plants and Pollinators,” this week’s guest, Victoria Matthewson, uses her embroidery art to shine a light on this issue. The book is a comprehensive guide to needlepainting, along with several designs of pollinators (many insects other than bees pollinate) and their favorite plants. We had a delightful conversation with this talented needle artist, learning about her needle-arts career, interest in insects and plants, and how she developed her new book. We also enjoy hearing about her terrific idea to build a sewing shed in her garden. Also, for a review of the book, be sure to visit Mary Corbet’s Needle ‘n Thread site at needlenthread.com.–Beth and Gary

Fiber Talk with Jessica Grimm

Jessica’s St. Laurence goldwork project, based on a late-medieval Dutch orphrey.
We’re off to Bavaria this week to talk to embroidery teacher and designer Jessica Grimm. In 2011, Jessica left her career as an archeozoologist to become a needlework teacher. In 2014 she and her husband relocated to Bavaria where she “lives to stitch, loves fair trade, has a vegetable plot, and avoids processed foods.” Jessica studied at the Royal School of Needlework and taught several of their classes in England and the U.S. She is proficient in a variety of stitching techniques, some rather unusual. Through her workshops and courses, she spreads the love for embroidery as widely as possible. We hope you enjoy our conversation with Jessica. At the very least, you’ll learn a bit about archeozoology.–Christine and Gary
