Fiber Talk with Lucy Newman

Lucy’s interpretation of what a flower might look like after nuclear mutation.
Pet portrait by Lucy Newman.
This week’s Fiber Talk podcast is sponsored by the Embroiderers’ Guild of America at egausa.org. Our guest, Lucy Newman of LJN Studio, is the 2022 Hand and Lock Prize winner, a 2023 Fine Art Textile Awards finalist, and an extremely talented and creative needlework artist. In our conversation, we learn about her formal schooling, how her years working with sculpture artist Robert Montgomery shaped her art, and how she approaches her designs. She loves to do bullion and French knots and has created a fascinating series of embroidery art pieces that reflect her vision of how botanicals would mutate after an apocalypse. She’s also optimistic about the future of embroidery: “I think that embroidery is having a revival due to people’s frustration with constantly being plugged into technology and throw-away culture.” We hope you enjoy the conversation and encourage you to visit Lucy’s website and Instagram account to see more of her work.–Beth and Gary

Fiber Talk with Elizabeth Ashdown

Passementerie by Elizabeth Ashdown
Textile art by Elizabeth Ashdown.

This week we’re talking about passementerie art with Elizabeth Ashdown. The show is sponsored by Sassy Jacks Stitchery. Typically, when passementerie is discussed, the focus is on decorative trimming such as tassels, braids, and fringes. This time, we are taking the discussion to a whole new level because Elizabeth combines passementerie techniques, weaving, and thread dyeing to create a completely new world of textile art. In our conversation, we learn about her journey to develop this art form, how she goes about creating commissioned pieces, her teaching, and The Experimental Weave Lab, a fascinating venture that she hopes to repeat in the future. We also get a small tease of Elizabeth’s upcoming book. Enjoy the show and visit Elizabeth’s website to learn more about her textile-art world.–Beth and Gary

Fiber Talk with Wendy Lynn

Art by Sally Mavor, the April 2023 Virtual Lecture presenter.
Whale Tale Journal online class by Catherine Jordan.

Sassy Jacks Stitchery is sponsoring this week’s conversation with Wendy Lynn, Director of Membership and Marketing for the Embroiderers’ Guild of America. Our overall goal in this conversation is to help listeners better understand the depth and breadth of what the EGA has to offer to needleworkers of all ages, skill levels, and technique interests. In other words, it’s not an organization just for surface embroiderers. You’ll also learn that there are several ways to participate in EGA activities, from local chapters to regional organizations to the national level. If you don’t want to join a local chapter or one doesn’t exist nearby, become a member at large. There are also many free offerings to non-members. We hope you’ll enjoy learning more about EGA and what it provides to needleworkers.–Beth and Gary

Fiber Talk with Diane L. Murtha

Diane’s new book is available now.
Art quilt by Diane L. Murtha.

This week we visit the quilting world and art-quilt designer Diane L. Murtha. In Diane’s creative mind, most quilts aren’t finished until she’s added some beads, embroidery, appliqué, or anything else that might embellish or tell more of the quilt’s story. We learn about her approach to art and creativity and how she doesn’t always concern herself if her points don’t match up. Diane’s new book, “Artful Insights in Fabric, Quilted Bits of Wit and Wisdom,” is also part of the discussion because it further explores her “what if” approach to creating visual experiences through textile art. Enjoy the show and be sure to visit Diane’s website to keep up with her new creations and her teaching and lecturing schedule, including her presentations at Quilt Week, April 26 to 29 at the National Quilt Museum in Paducah, KY.–Beth and Gary

Fiber Talk with Holly Jackson

Chesapeake Skipjack Boat design by Holly Jackson.
Holly Jackson of Flossing in the Moonlight joins us this week to talk about her mixed-media art and how she has moved quickly from starting to exhibiting and teaching her style of needle art. One of her current creation is the Chesapeake Skipjack Boat, on display as part of the Changing Chesapeake exhibition at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum. It’s also a class Holly will be offering in the near future. Our discussion ranges from Holly’s approach to her love of stump-work and 3D designs. We also talk about her Mardi Gras float series, inspired by historic watercolor paintings in the Tulane Univ. collection. That leads to an exploration of New Orleans culture and art. Holly is an exciting young needle artist who is finding new areas of textile art. Visit her Flossing in the Moonlight (she’s a night owl) website to see more of her art and find out about upcoming classes.–Beth and Gary
