Fiber Talk with Lisa Call

Altura by Lisa Call.
Round and Round by Lisa Call

The stunning textile art of Lisa Call is our focus this week. Lisa grew up in Colorado in a creative environment. Creativity took a bit of a back seat when she chose computer science for a day job/career. An art museum tour connected her with abstract art and a move to New Zealand has allowed her to fully explore that art form. It’s fascinating to see how she uses the series approach to explore every aspect of a basic design. Equally interesting is how she puts limits on her approach to prevent getting bogged down in distractions. How do you tap into this creativity? Visit Lisa’s Make Big Art website and take a class. She’ll help you expand your horizons.–Gary

Fiber Talk with Christine Miller II

Scarlet Coral by Christine Miller
“Weaving with Wire” by Christine Miller

This week’s Fiber Talk show is sponsored by Sassy Jacks Stitchery. When we first talked with Christine Miller in Feb. 2022 about her weaving-with-wire art, she was in the early stages of writing a book. That book, “Weaving with Wire: Creating Woven Metallic Fabric,” is now available and Christine returns this week to talk about it. It’s a beautiful book that opens the door to exploring Christine’s textile art techniques. For non-weavers, the book contains a large section on art and the art-creation process. Weavers will want the book to help them take their weaving to a new level. Non-weavers will want to own the book because it will expand their creative horizons. Everyone will simply enjoy looking at Christine’s art. The book is available from your LNS or wherever books are sold. It’s a good addition to your library and we’re confident you’ll enjoy hearing how the book came to be.–Beth and Gary

Fiber Talk with Susan Fay Schauer John

Kingfisher textile art by Susan Fay Schauer John.
Owl textile art by Susan Fay Schauer John.

Susan Fay Schauer John is a terrific textile artist and artist in general and is partnering with Gail Patterson to create the Spiralis Gallery. She’s also our guest this week in a show sponsored by Sassy Jacks Stitchery. For Susan it was a decision between science and art. Art won, hands down, and we are the beneficiaries. Her art career includes wood turning, oil painting, and colored-pencil “painting.” But she found her home when she started using pieces of cloth to create a base and detailed free-form sewing to bring her subjects to life. The result is captivating art. Susan’s art will be exhibited in the newly established Zebra Gallery, which will be co-located with the Spiralis Gallery in Easton, MD. Susan and Gail Patterson (Fiber Talk, 10-8-23) are partners in the Spiralis Gallery. The grand opening for these galleries is Nov. 3, 2023 and the premiere exhibition will be “Woman, Phenomenally.” The opening reception will be Oct. 28 at 4:30 p.m. Eastern and feature an artist talk by Ernesto Beckford. We hope you enjoy this week’s show, invite to listen to last week’s conversation with Gail Patterson, and encourage you to visit the Spiralis and Zebra Galleries when you’re next in Maryland.–Gary

Fiber Talk with Gail Patterson

Baron Samedi, sequins and beads on fabric, by Myrlande Constant, Spiralis Gallery.

BaronLaCroix by Yves Telemark at the Spiralis Gallery.
This week’s Fiber Talk podcast is sponsored by the Embroiderers’ Guild of America at egausa.org. Our guest is Gail Patterson, director and curator of the Spiralis Gallery. As Gail reaches the end of her career as an anesthesiologist, she already has a good start on her second career, curating Afro-Caribbean/Haitian art. In our conversation, we learn how Gail came to love Haitian art while volunteering her medical skills in Haiti. Her first art purchase was an interesting experience that led to an art collection of significant size. From that, Spiralis Gallery was formed as an online offering. In the coming weeks that website gallery will be partnered with a physical gallery in Easton, MD. Among the collection is some impressive textile and bead art, with more to come. Next week’s guest will be Gail’s partner, Susan Fay Schauer John, who creates stunning thread paintings.–Beth and Gary

Fiber Talk with Ruth Singer

Pieces created for the Blossom and Thorn hedge exhibit.
Artist-maker Ruth Singer is this week’s guest. Ruth is a true textile artist and a master at dealing with the What if? question. To quote Ruth, “I work mainly with old cloth, often damaged, torn and worn, which I combine with hand stitch, natural dye, quilting, appliqué and mixed media to create subtle and emotive pieces.” In our conversation, we’re only able to explore a portion of what she does/offers to the needlework community. Her current “Cultures of Care” basket of projects and art explorations is multi-faceted and will provide many inspirational avenues for textile artists to explore. Ruth is the author of six books and produces the “Making Meaning” podcast and journal. This week’s podcast is only the tip of the iceberg. Be sure to visit Ruth’s site to learn and experience much more.–Beth and Gary
