The Old Scot from Hands Across The Sea Samplers

It’s just Gary for this week’s mid-week chat. First item up this week is congratulations to Marie Zaczkowski, winner of our first Hands Across The Sea Samplers The Old Scot chart. We’re giving away another copy of The Old Scot, so listen to the podcast to learn how you can win. Of course, big thanks to Nicola and Hands Across The Sea for providing these giveaway charts. In this show Gary also talks about Floss Tube shows, the upcoming Orna Willis “Come Design With Me” class, and the Needle Arts Mystery Retreat. Be sure to listen Sunday when we’re joined by Abigail Timmis. Thanks to all for listening, telling others, and your support.–Gary and Christine

  1. This is the only fiber talk show I have listened too! LOL Guess I better get busy and explore!

  2. Of course, my favorite is Fiber Talk!!!
By the way, the person is probably King James, the monarchy who rebuilt Linlithglow palace. Tell Christine I missed her. Thanks Gary

  3. Oh that’s a toss up between Theresa Baird or Nicola Parkman!!

  4. I read Mary Corbert’s NeedlenThread so of course the first podcast I listened to was your interview with her. Then I’ve listened to others; Theresa Baird’s samplers, Yvette Stanton’s whitework and happily introduced to Tess and Thorn’s fresh needlepoint style. Your podcasts are fun and informative but by far the one I liked the most was Nicola Parkman’s (I regularly read the HATS blog, too). I would love to win The Old Scot so I’ll keep my fingers crossed that my number will come up!!

  5. First listened to you when you interviewed Vonna Pfeiffer, came back to hear Theresa Baird and then I was hooked. Really enjoyed Yvette Stanton. Nicola Parkman’s visits were a joy to listen to. Please don’t make me pick a favorite from these four! Would love to win Old Scot!

Future podcast idea…. Amy Mitten. Check out her website!

    1. Thanks for the Amy Mitten suggestion. She’s on the list.

  6. What a hard question! All guests have been interesting, and I have looked up some incredible pieces after listening to the podcasts (for example, Toni Gerdes’ Fire and Ice as well as the museum the piece is based on). That said, I liked Yvette Stanton the best. I love hardanger and didn’t know that it originally was done on finer fabric. I also love that she and her family go to locations off the beaten path to find such unique forms of needlework.

  7. I’m brand new to the podcasts, so I guess my answer would have to be the May 17th one, since it was my 1st!
    Debbie

  8. My favorite fiber talk so far has been the one with Nicola.

  9. I just started listening last week when I saw a friend comment on how wonderful and informative your podcasts are! I want to crank out stitched beauties like Nicola Parkman when I grow up. ? Of course I would love to win this drawing. Needles crossed!

  10. So far I’ve enjoyed the May 17th discussion with Nicola the most…. particularly about buying antique samplers. Very informative.

  11. Fibertalk is the first show I have listened too. Love listening about embroidery, stumpwork, crewel and any other hand embroidery. So you are currently #1.

  12. I loved May 7th podcast with Nicola Parkman. She is who introduced me to your wonderful Fiber Talk.

  13. How interesting. I don’t go needlepoint anymore but my stitch friends do. I’m a cross stitcher. I listened but didn’t understand how this ti s in with Nicola’s contest. Still good though!

  14. I love them all but my favorite so far has been Jennifer. I couldn’t get all of the Toni Gerdes to play nor have I listened to the Orna Willis one yet. Missed you Christine. Look forward to the ones about the Mystery Sampler.

  15. Really enjoying the podcasts! My favorite show(s) so far would be a tie between Mary Corbet and Nicola Parkman–hard to choose.

  16. Fiber Talk is my first needlework podcast, and I am really enjoying it! Thank you!

  17. The first one I listened to was Mary Corbet and I’ve been listening faithfully since then. It’s too hard to choose a favorite. Nicola Parkman was thoroughly charming and informative. But Yvette Stanton was really interesting too. As was Toni Gerdes… and everyone else. They’ve all been good in different ways. I hope you all continue with this podcast for a long time!

  18. My favorite so far is the May 7 podcast with Nicola Parkman…I am listening to all of them however, as I just found this podcast.

  19. My favorite podcast so far has been with Nicola Parkman of Hands Across the Seas Samplers. As others have mentioned I am new to the podcast so have been listening to them during my drive to and from work.

  20. Definitely Nicola Parkman-both times! I also really loved Theresa Baird and Mary Corbett. But seriously every one has been a joy to listen to. I hope you will interview more cross stitch designers!

    1. Thanks. Just finished recording a show with cross stitcher/designer Stacy Nash. It’ll be posted in two weeks. Thanks for listening.
      Gary

    2. Loved the Theresa Baird fibertalk show.

  21. Favorite podcast – so hard to choose! I think I’ve got a top three – is that good enough? Mary Corbet, because I’ve read her blog for years and could follow along with all the topics, projects, etc that she was sharing – it was like hearing an old friend. Yvette Stanton, because I own a number of her books, love her work, feel very familiar with her, and felt listening to her was just that extra piece of hanging with with another old friend. And Tess and Thorn. While I’m not into painted canvas, they just sounded like to people I would love to just hang around with and have a good conversation. Loved listening to them talk about starting a business, about bringing fresh ideas to an industry, about following dreams. Missed Christine this week. And, thanks beyond words for your kindness in talking about me!

    1. Thanks for the kind words and you’re more than welcome for the mention about your FlossTube videos. I have really enjoyed them.
      Gary

  22. Enjoyed Theresa Baird episode. Might I suggest Betsy Morgan of Willing Hands as a future guest?

  23. I started listening to your podcast just recently. I was directed to it by Hands Across the Sea. So I’d say because this led me to you, I’ll vote for the May 7 podcast with Nicola Parkman. I have a whole list of podcasts that I intend to tune into shortly. Top of the list is your April 2 podcast with Mary Corbet. She is so generous with sharing her knowledge–I’d love to hear her voice!

  24. I like the midweek chats! Love all the episodes.

  25. Another good podcast! But I miss Christine. I’m hoping my number comes up for the embroidery kit!! Keep up the interesting conversations! And congrats on moving up in the podcast ranks!!

  26. I’m ready to win that Old Scot! My favorite podcast was with Mary Corbet. But I’m partial because she’s my sister! But really, I love them all! Ignore that last post, because I forgot to leave out my favorite podcast. And congrats on your placement in podcast ranks!

  27. I am so glad I found this podcast! I first found your podcast when you interview Mary Corbett since I follow her blog. However, Nicola Parkman’s interview is my current favorite since it opened up the world of reproduction samplers to me! my husband and son are such history buffs and I have been sharing with them the amazing history about these samplers and the time they were stitched! Thank you!

  28. I enjoyed the podcast with Nicola Parkman where she was discussing the needlework auctions. I just found that segment fascinating!

  29. I have enjoyed all of the podcasts so far – I am familiar with many of your guests through their blogs or seeing their designs, but it is so fun to hear their voices. I have had the pleasure of taking classes with a few. Really enjoying the Podcast – which by the way is working for me now, not sure what the early problem was.

  30. I have listened to all the podcasts! Always looking forward to hearing the next one. Two favorites: Elizabeth Bozevich and Sandra Arthur!

  31. My favorites so far have been Nicola Parkman and Mary Corbet. I loved hearing Nicola speak about antique samplers. Wonderful to hear Mary speak after following her on her blog. I began listening faithfully in March. I am working on catching up on the earlier podcasts.
Thanks to you and your guests for giving so many great talks and websites to research. It has led me to explore areas I did not know nor know how to begin finding.

  32. Truthfully these are the first podcasts I have ever listened too, and I have only listened to your interviews with Nicola so far.
I believe though I am now hooked 🙂

  33. I recently discovered your podcast through a link with Nicola Parkman, so yours is my first. And now, after listening to this show, I will explore Flosstube. Thank you for providing great information. Learning from other stitchers is wonderful!

  34. I think my favorite was Cate Carter Evans. Talk about a yarn stash…

  35. My favorite show was the One on the Old Scot. Very informative. I am new to Pod cast and am enjoying them.

  36. Too hard to choose just one favorite! I started listening with Vonna Pfeiffer, love her! I also love Nicola Parkman. I’m so into the history of samplers. I’m definitely going back and listening to the rest! (Amy Mitten is wonderful! She did a seminar for our Samplar Guild a few years ago)

  37. I’m new to podcasts as are a number of others. I found out about you through Mary Corbet’s blog. I really enjoyed the show with Nicola Parkman about Hands Across the Sea Samplers and the Old Scot sampler. In fact, I enjoyed it so much, I bought the chart and cannot wait to start stitching it! I just love the history behind so many of these samplers. I have too many charts in my stash to ever finish them, but it keeps me going!

    1. Really glad you’re enjoying the shows and I know you’ll enjoy stitching The Old Scot. BTW, we all have too many charts so you’re in good company.
      Gary

  38. I really enjoyed the first midweek chat and getting to know Gary and Christine. But of the interviews I think my favorite has been Tess and Thorne.

  39. Hard to pick just one of all the ones I have listened to so far … did enjoy Sandra Arthur, Mary Corbet and Nicola Parkman… Sandra enthusiasm and knowledge were inspiring and gave me lots to think about.

You had asked for suggestions as to who to invite – many people come to mind but three that might be of worthy of interviews are Tracy Franklin , Philippa Trumbull and Alison Holt – all based in UK

( having trouble with the internet right now – hope this gets through this time)

    Keep up the good work!

    1. Nupur,
Thanks for listening and for the suggestions.
      Gary

  40. I just started listening with Nicola Parkman – so I’d have to say that’s my favorite. But I’ve subscribed and will catch up on what I’ve missed!

  41. The first fiber podcast I listened to was with Nicola of Hands Across the Seas. I loved learning about The Old Scot. I plan to listen to all the episodes in the future.

May I suggest Rebekah Smith for an interview? Love her works in wool. Thank you!!

    1. Thanks. We’ll put Rebekah on the list.
      Gary

  42. Boy, I honestly couldn’t pick a favorite. I love them all, but since I’m more cross stitch-slanted, I guess I would say the cross-stitch-oriented episodes are my favorites. And I would have to join the chorus for Nicola Parkman. She’s wonderful. But I really do enjoy every show. (Just a note, which I deliberated a long time about mentioning… Gary’s *light-hearted* criticism of the Floss Tube stitcher who films in front of a blank wall was unkind. I watch a lot of Floss Tube, and I watch it for the lovely people and the stitching. I don’t care where they film. These are everyday people, not pros (and wasn’t that the original idea behind YouTube?). I am still here, because I enjoy the podcast, but I almost unsubscribed over this.

    1. Thanks for your thoughts. I was hardly the first to hassle her about her blank walls and she has even mentioned it in one or two videos (I’ve watched them all). Worth noting that in her most-recent video, she has a framed piece hanging on a wall. Also, it’s worth watching her videos. She is an absolute stitching machine. It’s impressive just to see what she accomplishes.

  43. My favorite podcast was with Mary Corbett. She is one of the first blogs I happened across on embroidery which has always been something I have an interest in. You are so right – she is a wealth of information. I enjoy her blog very much. I also enjoyed the podcasts with Nicola Parkman. I really enjoy the
historical part of that. Basically at heart I have been a quilter for many years and enjoy the traditional, historic aspect of that craft. Keep up the good work on Fiber Talk. I enjoy it very much. I listen while I stitch! Kay H
