Fiber Talk with Kim Young

Birds of a Feather design.

We begin a new week by talking with Kim Young of Sassy Jacks Stitchery about the needlework hobby, exciting growth areas and why they are growing, and the role the internet and social media play for hobbyists and business owners. People keep referring to needlework as a dying hobby, but we’re not seeing it and the discussion tells you why. We hope you enjoy it.–Gary and Christine

  1. Another great talk Gary! It was fun listening to you and Kim. My local shop is not doing well. But she has no online presence, no classes, not a lot of new stuff. It is sad. I shop there when I can, but end up buying stuff online.
Maybe a talk on beginner tips. Tony Minera? Gay Ann Rogers? Margret Bendig?
BTW, I used your tip of a flat iron for Neon Rays. Game changer.
Christine-If you want to learn to dye and control your color, this is the class. I still refer to her notes when I dye.

  2. Gary, There is a list of stitching shops around the US and even some foreign countries, it is located in the files section of a facebook group titled, “Stitching Road Trip”. I have used it to visit over 90 shops! It is way more up to date than any published book and members constantly are updating with new shops and sadly some shop closures. The file is available by location or alpha by shop name. AND recently one of the members (Ann Davis) made an interactive map so you can hover your mouse on a shop to see the name of the shop, this is most helpful. Then you can go to the list for specifics on the shop (address, city, website for hours, etc). The facebook page has over 2,000 members and is administered by Jean Farish. It’s a must for anyone interested in visiting brick and mortar shops for cross stitch and needlepoint. — Chris Canaday

  3. Gary,
Thank you so much for the conversation with Kim Young. It was such an enjoyable conversation. I have been stitching for 25 years or so, and am embarrassed to say that I never knew which end of the skein to pull. Thank you for teaching me something important and an hour of pleasure.

  4. Beth, What is the name of your local shop? Would love to visit it, please share the name and town. Thank you.
