Fiber Talk Midweek Chat, 11-24-21

Backstitching is bringing this one to life for Jenifer.

Wednesday seemed like a good day for a conversation about needlework so Jenifer and Gary fired up the microphones to do a complete rundown of how WIPgo works, what attracts us to designs and designers, cleaning up stitching areas, and whether social media has played a role in us having too many WIPs. Mark your calendars for Dec. 8 when Kathy Andrews will share the art stitching she did while battling breast cancer. Sunday: A tour of Gary’s “sanitized” studio.–Jenifer and Gary

  1. The conversation about social media and FOMO and overbuying is a timely one during this shopping season. Watching FlossTube and being on Instagram make me want ALL the pretty things, and plus I get sucked into the conversations around supporting designers and shops. I literally have more cross stitch charts, canvas charts, painted canvases, and knitting patterns than I will EVER stitch.

I really do want to support the industry, but what’s a stitcher to do when you just don’t need more? I have at least six Black Friday sale emails in my inbox at this very moment. I’d love to support them all, but can’t.

Maybe we need to start some kind of an endowment fund for designers to which we can contribute without actually buying more stuff. I dunno.

  2. Thank you Gary and Jenifer for your discussion of WIPGO! Gary you asked the right questions about it, and Jenifer provided more explanation. I’m in for 2022. I really appreciate your responsiveness to my previous comment. I’ve participated for several years in a Facebook group called “Stitch from Stash” to help me curb my impulse buying of charts/kits. I won’t live long enough to stitch all that I have and I still love 99% of what I have. I plan to combine Stitch from Stash with WIPGO for 2022. I’ve been trying to FINISH stitching more WIPs the past two years and WIPGO will help that goal.

Like Jenifer, I worked one project at a time. I’m not sure exactly when that changed. I know as I met and made more stitching friends through one annual retreat I attend every year I gradually felt “enabled” to go from one project to two at a time. Then I joined an ANG chapter followed by their CyberPointers chapter which meant a new project for each. Now I belong to an EGA chapter as well. Facebook was my downfall! I found so many stitching groups there. I learned what a SAL was! Mystery projects scared me. I didn’t want to pay for a mystery chart and supplies in case I didn’t like it. Then along came Brenden Kirk with his free SALS so I got hooked! There are other free SALS on Facebook as well.

Next came FiberTalk early in the pandemic. You brought me kicking and screaming into YouTube, FlossTube and podcasts. I’m a goner! THANK YOU FIBERTALK TEAM!!
