Fiber Talk with Jean Lea

The Attic store with tables for classes and samplers covering the walls.
Elizabethan Treasures from Linda Barry, considered by Jean to be one of the best whitework samplers ever published.

If you stitch samplers for very long you’ll likely encounter the Attic Needlework & Collectibles shop in Mesa, AZ, and sampler addict/owner Jean Lea. She is our guest this week for a terrific conversation about how this hub of the sampler world came to be; its many offerings, classes, retreats, and charitable activities, and the obsession Jean has with samplers of all kinds, particularly reproduction samplers. Shop visitors can easily spend a day exploring the large collection of samplers on display and learning about their history, in addition to thousands of other cross-stitch charts and supplies. We hope you enjoy the conversation as much as we did.–Christine and Gary

  1. Love the podcast-again! Gay Ann Rogers? The shop called Needle in a Haystack? Needles-my son had leukemia when he was 8. He wanted to learn hardanger so I taught him that and beading to keep him busy during hospital visits. He always needed new needles as the chemo affected his body chemistry. He is 20 and no longer does needlework as he is in college. Maybe again someday….

  2. Great podcast once again! Attic Needlework is one of the best needlework stores in the U.S.!

  3. Gary & Christine: On the podcast I referred to a most poignant sampler, and I wanted to provide here the correct sampler maker’s name, Elizabeth Parker, and her sampler is housed in the V&A Museum. Here is the link to see it and read about it: https://collections.vam.ac.uk/item/O70506/sampler-parker-elizabeth/

    1. Jean, Thanks for the update and the link. I love the history these samplers reveal.
